Let pretend that you're invited to dinner with a mighty leader. As you sit down to dinner, you'd expect to see servants bringing out trays and waiting on you and this leader. But that doesn't happen. Instead, the leader gets up, goes into the kitchen and brings out the food and sets it before you. The leader is acting like a servant! What would you do?
That's exactly what happened in our story today. The disciples gathered to eat, they were arguing among themselves about who was the greatest and best disciple. As they argued, Jesus interrupted them and said, "You've all seen how kings behave, lording it over others. But I want you to be servants of each other in the same way I have been like a servant to you."
So, how do you think we can be servants to each other? [Wait for answers]
Let's pray about that.
God, we thank you that Jesus showed us how we should be with each other, serving each other. Help us not to be proud and demand that others do what we want. Help us be more like Jesus and serve each other gladly.
We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
