29-May-16
The centurion says, in our gospel reading for today, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; therefore I did not presume to come to you."
We might feel that same way as we come to the table. Coming into the Lord's presence is nothing to be taken for granted and even the best of us does not deserve it.
Yet the host of the table calls us and welcomes all of us here, not because we are worthy, but because God is gracious; because God loves each and every one of us. So come.
Let us pray.
Prayer:
God, who is full of grace and forgiveness, God, who gave us Jesus to show us the deepness and abidingness of your love, we thank you that you did send Jesus. We thank you for his words of life and wholeness. We thank you that he did not even withhold his own life to show us how you love us. We thank you for the forgiveness of our sin and freedom from death that is a gift from you through Jesus.
Now, as we take this bread and cup, fill us again with your Holy Spirit, that we may reach out to others, particularly the people the rest of the world expects us to reject. Send us into the world bearing your Good News.
In the name of Jesus, our Risen Lord, Amen.
