Offering Meditation for Baptism of the Lord A – 11-Jan-26
11-Jan-26 (Matthew 3:13-17)
One of the curious things that Jesus says in the story of his baptism is that "This is to fulfil all righteousness." Jesus was concerned about actions that fulfilled what he and others claimed... and so should we be.
In the case of Jesus' baptism, it was a symbolic act to show that repentance is an integral part of our life of faith.
As we come to the time of offering, it's time to consider other integral parts of our life of faith, demonstrations of what we claim to be concerned about. We care for the sick and dying. We give aid to the poor, homeless, and the helpless. We work for justice so that all people are treated fairly. We share the love of God through words and actions.
Our offerings are one way we participate in that work. They're also a necessary act of obedience and faith the causes us to connect with God's generosity and care for the world.
Let's consider that as the deacons come to collect our offering for today.
Prayer:
Please join me in a spirit of prayer.
God who reaches out to us in so many ways and forms, help us to be a part of that generosity. May others see you in our actions and deeds and know that all of them are loved.
Bless these gifts as well, that they would serve your purposes in the world.
We pray in the name of Jesus, our Lord, Amen.
