Jesus warns his disciples about the cost of being a disciple in the gospel passage for today. It certainly does cost. Being a disciple will take your whole life and require of you everything you are, so it makes sense to consider that.
Here's another thing to consider as we come to the table: Consider that we already have freedom from sin and a loving God who cares about each of us. It is this same God who didn't even spare his son so we could live that calls us to be a part of growing God's realm in this world.
So consider the cost, certain, but also consider how much God has given us.
Let us pray.
God who loves us so dearly that you gave even your son that we might have a place in your realm. We thank you for Jesus, who in his life showed us your love in word and deed. We thank you for the gifts of life and freedom from sin that he got for us through his death. We thank you for this bread and cup that remind us of all he is and all he gave.
As we take the bread and cup, renew your Spirit in us that we can go into your world full of the love Jesus gives to us and share your love with those we meet in our words and in our actions.
In the name of Jesus, our Risen Lord, Amen.
