DisciplesNet Worship #432: (Perkins 09.30.2018)

to watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

The Church is many things, but one most important thing is that it is a place of healing, where people can come, battered and bruised by the world, and find healing, hope, and eventually wholeness. Rev. Anjeanette Perkings uses James 5:13-20 and explains how we can make our congregations such places.
Our worship today is just over 25 minutes long and includes a time of prayer, scripture, a number of favorite hymns, preaching as well as communion. You may choose to participate, or simply meditate as we tell of Jesus' invitation to "do this in remembrance of me." If you would like to share with us at the table that goes beyond earthly boundaries of time, place, and structure, we ask that you prepare a piece of bread of some type and a drink such as grape juice, wine, or water. As we pray, our prayers extend to where you are. If you are unable to eat or drink, you may want to use a symbolic gesture or mental symbol as you come together at this table of remembrance with us.

Is the Lord with us? It's a question every Christian asks at key times during the life of faith. Rev. Anjeanette Perkins uses Philippians 2:1-15 and Exodus 17:1-7 to examine how God is present in our lives and how we can expect to encounter God.

When the religious leaders of Jesus' day criticized Jesus because his disciples hadn't washed their hands before eating, Jesus challenged them by speaking about how a spirit can be made clean. Pastor Russ uses this story from Mark 7:1-5, 14-15, 22-23 to examine how we can experience the cleanliness that comes from God in our own lives.

"The Full Armor of God" is one of Paul's best analogies, but what do all those pieces of armor actually mean. Pastor Russ takes a look at Ephesians 6:11-17 and, usual examples of the Roman Armor of Paul's day, explains what Paul had in mind when he used it to describe the tools God has given us to live out our faith.

One of the great images from the scriptures is a Great Feast where all are welcome. In the Gospels, the Table of Christ picks up this image and carries it forward. Pastor Deb Phelps speaks from John 6:53-59 about how we as Christians join with people of all times and places at the Table of Christ.
