DisciplesNet Worship #434: (Smith 10.14.2018)

to watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

We truly want to serve God with all that we are, but we never quite get there. There always seems to be something that holds us back. Pastor Russ uses Mark 10:17-31 and the story of the rich man who could not give it up to help us think about that "one thing" we each have in our lives that stands in our way for a life of true service.
Our worship today is 29 minutes long and includes a time of prayer, scripture, a number of favorite hymns, preaching as well as communion. You may choose to participate, or simply meditate as we tell of Jesus' invitation to "do this in remembrance of me." If you would like to share with us at the table that goes beyond earthly boundaries of time, place, and structure, we ask that you prepare a piece of bread of some type and a drink such as grape juice, wine, or water. As we pray, our prayers extend to where you are. If you are unable to eat or drink, you may want to use a symbolic gesture or mental symbol as you come together at this table of remembrance with us.

The Church is many things, but one most important thing is that it is a place of healing, where people can come, battered and bruised by the world, and find healing, hope, and eventually wholeness. Rev. Anjeanette Perkings uses James 5:13-20 and explains how we can make our congregations such places.
Our worship today is just over 25 minutes long and includes a time of prayer, scripture, a number of favorite hymns, preaching as well as communion. You may choose to participate, or simply meditate as we tell of Jesus' invitation to "do this in remembrance of me." Is the Lord with us? It's a question every Christian asks at key times during the life of faith. Rev. Anjeanette Perkins uses Philippians 2:1-15 and Exodus 17:1-7 to examine how God is present in our lives and how we can expect to encounter God.
Our worship today is just over 26 minutes long and includes a time of prayer, scripture, a number of favorite hymns, preaching as well as communion. We all have experiences in our lives when we feel alone. We all have experiences in our lives when we feel less than whole. Pastor Bob uses the scriptures from Isaiah 35:4-7 and Mark 7:31-37 to talk about these times and provide hope for God's presence and healing in our lives.

When the religious leaders of Jesus' day criticized Jesus because his disciples hadn't washed their hands before eating, Jesus challenged them by speaking about how a spirit can be made clean. Pastor Russ uses this story from Mark 7:1-5, 14-15, 22-23 to examine how we can experience the cleanliness that comes from God in our own lives.
Our worship today is just over 27 minutes long and includes a time of prayer, scripture, a number of favorite hymns, preaching as well as communion. "The Full Armor of God" is one of Paul's best analogies, but what do all those pieces of armor actually mean. Pastor Russ takes a look at Ephesians 6:11-17 and, usual examples of the Roman Armor of Paul's day, explains what Paul had in mind when he used it to describe the tools God has given us to live out our faith.

One of the great images from the scriptures is a Great Feast where all are welcome. In the Gospels, the Table of Christ picks up this image and carries it forward. Pastor Deb Phelps speaks from John 6:53-59 about how we as Christians join with people of all times and places at the Table of Christ.

On a lonely hill, far from any large city or town, over 5000 people were fed, starting from five loaves and two fishes. What does this miracle mean? How do we understand it for our lives today?
