DisciplesNet Worship #696: Proper 17A – (Shaw 9.03.2023)

Being a disciple can be hard, and Jesus never promised anything else. But with the difficulty comes the joy of seeing God's realm come into being, seeing people find life and hope in this world. Pastor Bob speaks to us from Matthew 16:13-26 about these things and about Jesus, the one who exemplified the life of faith in God for us.
Our worship service is 28 minutes of prayer, some favorite hymns, teaching, and communion.

What does it mean to call Jesus "Messiah" or "Christ?" When Peter did this, Jesus told him that that was the "rock" on which the Church would be built. Rev. Anjeanette Perkins speaks to us from Matthew 16:13-20 and helps us understand Jesus as our Messiah.

Who is my neighbor? We tend to think of our neighbor as someone like us who lives in the same community and has many of the same values that we have. Yet Jesus' story of the Samaritan who helped the man who was robbed and beaten on the road to Jericho tells us we need to look further. Rev. Dean Phelps talks to us from Luke 10:30-35 about this story and how Jesus calls us to a much wider idea of who our neighbors are.

When two oxen are yoked together and they're working together, they can do more and better work than simply combining the work of each. So it is when we are "yoked together with Jesus." But there's something even more. Jesus says, "Take my yoke upon you... for my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
