DisciplesNet Worship #700: Proper 21A – (Perkins 10.01.2023)

To watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

"Is the Lord with us?" This was the question that the Israelites asked Moses in the time when they were wandering in the desert. We sometimes wonder the same thing in our time and place. Rev. Anjeanette Perkins speaks to us from Philippians 2:1-13 and Exodus 17:1-7 to help us see signs of God's presence with us on our journey.
Our worship service is 30 minutes of prayer, some favorite hymns, teaching, and communion.
You may choose to participate, or simply meditate as we tell of Jesus' invitation to "do this in remembrance of me." If you would like to share with us at the table that goes beyond earthly boundaries of time, place, and structure, we ask that you prepare a piece of bread of some type and a drink such as grape juice, wine, or water. As we pray, our prayers extend to where you are. If you are unable to eat or drink, you may want to use a symbolic gesture or mental symbol as you come together at this table of remembrance with us.

We hope that as you join us for worship you will feel a blessing from being part. Please tell friends, family, and others you know about our online church that is here with doors that are always open, walls as wide as the world, and always room at the table.

Paul's Letter to the Philippian congregation is different from his other letters. The Philippians understood what the Church was called to be and they did their best to live up to that. So, Paul writes to them about the struggles of the life of faith and how one can endure. Pastor Mary Beth speaks to us from Philippians 1:21-30 and helps us to understand how we too can live out our faith in the ups and downs of daily life.

One thing we all have in common is that there are times in our life when someone does something that hurts us. In the scripture for today, Matthew 28:21-35, Jesus talks about the need for us to forgive them beyond our human tendency to remember and count wrongs against us. Who is my neighbor? We tend to think of our neighbor as someone like us who lives in the same community and has many of the same values that we have. Yet Jesus' story of the Samaritan who helped the man who was robbed and beaten on the road to Jericho tells us we need to look further. Rev. Dean Phelps talks to us from Luke 10:30-35 about this story and how Jesus calls us to a much wider idea of who our neighbors are.
