DisciplesNet Worship #655: Advent A1 – Hope – (Shaw 11.27.2022)

To watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

Advent is both a time of expectation and a time of remembering: We wait for the coming of the celebration of the birth of Jesus and we remember that it has already happened. How do we faithfully balance these two? Pastor Bob speaks to us from Isaiah 2:1-5 and Isaiah 9:2-7 to help us understand this advent journey of hope.
This worship service is just over 29 minutes of worship, prayer, scripture, a few favorite hymns, and communion. You may choose to participate, or simply meditate as we tell of Jesus' invitation to "do this in remembrance of me." If you would like to share with us at the table that goes beyond earthly boundaries of time, place, and structure, we ask that you prepare a piece of bread of some type and a drink such as grape juice, wine, or water. As we pray, our prayers extend to where you are. If you are unable to eat or drink, you may want to use a symbolic gesture or mental symbol as you come together at this table of remembrance with us.

Toward the end of the growing seasons, many cultures celebrate the abundance of what has been gathered as they prepare for the months when food is scarcer. Both the Hebrew and Christian cultures in the Bible celebrated God's providing for them and gave God thanks. This worship service is our way of doing that before we move into the time of Advent.
This worship service is just over 29 minutes of worship, prayer, scripture, a few favorite hymns, and communion. Communion, the Table, the Eucharist, the Great Thanksgiving are all names for that central practice of Christians to gather at the table, sharing the symbols of Christ giving himself for us. At its core, that celebration is also a celebration that all of us, wherever we are in time and space, are made one through Christ. Pastor Russ speaks to us from Ephesians 4:1-7 and helps us appreciate what that essential unity can mean.
