DisciplesNet Worship #535: Proper 16 (Smith 08.23.2020)

To watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

Much of the Christian life is finding the right balance between two things that are both important, but can't be taken to either extreme. For instance, we must recognize that we are both sinful creatures, in constant need of God's grace and also recognize that we are God's own adopted children, always loved and always forgiven. Pastor Russ uses Romans 12:1-8 to help us find the right balance between the two.
Join us for 29 minutes of prayer, scripture, and a number of favorite hymns, preaching and communion. You may choose to participate, or simply meditate as we tell of Jesus' invitation to "do this in remembrance of me." If you would like to share with us at the table that goes beyond earthly boundaries of time, place, and structure, we ask that you prepare a piece of bread of some type and a drink such as grape juice, wine, or water. As we pray, our prayers extend to where you are. If you are unable to eat or drink, you may want to use a symbolic gesture or mental symbol as you come together at this table of remembrance with us.

Jesus warned us that what comes out of our hearts will be us at our best or worst and so we need to examine ourselves and seek to grow what is good within us. How do we pursue and grow the better parts of our nature? Pastor Deb looks at Jesus' words from Matthew 15:10-28 and helps us find our way to "higher ground."
Join us for just over 30 minutes of prayer, scripture, and a number of favorite hymns including Dean Phelps singing "Higher Ground". You'll also find preaching and communion. You may choose to participate, or simply meditate as we tell of Jesus' invitation to "do this in remembrance of me." We all have dreams and aspirations that we carry in hope. Yet what do we do when the time we thought was soon or now becomes the time in some future? How do we hold on to the hope? Rev. Jesse Jackson Jr. of East 6th Street Christian Church in Oklahoma uses the story of the two travelers that encounter Jesus on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24:13-31 to help us know how to continue in hope when dreams are deferred.
Join us for 30 minutes of prayer, scripture, a number of favorite hymns, preaching as well as communion. As Christians we are called to love our neighbor and Jesus makes it clear that "neighbor" means anyone we encounter, even those we find hardest to love and least likely to love us back. Rev. Dean Phelps, Interim Regional Minister of the Christian Church in Kentucky uses Jesus' parable of the traveler and the Samaritan from Luke 10:25-37 to help us understand how to reach out in love to all those "others."
Join us for 27 minutes of prayer, scripture, a number of favorite hymns, preaching as well as communion. "Where can I go, to hide from your presence?" asks the Psalmist. Pastor Russ looks at Psalm 129 and the story of Jacob from Genesis 28:10-19a to help us remember that there is nowhere we can be that is apart from God.
