DisciplesNet Worship #711: Advent 3B – (Mullen12.17.2023)

Paul says, in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 that we should "rejoice always, pray constantly, and give thanks in all circumstances." How do we do that, especially in a world where joy and thanks seem so minimal, and prayers sometimes seem a weak response?
Pastor Mary Beth speaks to us from that set of verses to help us see how we can actually rejoice always.
Our worship service is 27 minutes of prayer, some favorite hymns, teaching, and communion.
You may choose to participate, or simply meditate as we tell of Jesus' invitation to "do this in remembrance of me." If you would like to share with us at the table that goes beyond earthly boundaries of time, place, and structure, we ask that you prepare a piece of bread of some type and a drink such as grape juice, wine, or water. As we pray, our prayers extend to where you are. If you are unable to eat or drink, you may want to use a symbolic gesture or mental symbol as you come together at this table of remembrance with us.

We hope that as you join us for worship you will feel a blessing from being part. Please tell friends, family, and others you know about our online church that is here with doors that are always open, walls as wide as the world, and always room at the table.

ORDER OF WORSHIP:

John the Baptizer's ministry took place out in the wilderness. The wilderness represents a place of testing, place where we stand revealed, and thus a place where repentance is necessary.
Pastor Bob speaks to us from Mark 1:1-8 and also refers to the children's book "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak to help us realize our own need to give God, not just the best, but all the rest as well.
Our worship service is 30 minutes of prayer, some favorite hymns, teaching, and communion.
You may choose to participate, or simply meditate as we tell of Jesus' invitation to "do this in remembrance of me." Wouldn't it be great if God would just come down and fix this mess? Pastor Russ speaks to us from Isaiah 64:1-9 and shows us how "fixing all this" is likely our responsibility with God's help. What we desire in terms of hope and peace will come from us bringing hope and pursuing peace.

The first letter of Paul we have is to the church in Thessalonica. The Christians there were struggling with their faith as they realized that Jesus would not be coming back soon. Jesus' answer to the Herodians and Pharisees to "give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's" sounds simple, but it contains complexities, not only of "how much?" but also of "in what way?" Jesus warned people that we wouldn't enter into the Realm of God simply because of who we knew or who we associate with. The Realm of God comes into being in those who act as Jesus acted and share God's love freely and openly. It's both a warning and an invitation. Pastor Deb speaks to us from Matthew 22:1-14, Jesus' story of the wedding feast, and Philippians 4:1-9 and helps us understand how we can be a part of God's emerging realm.
