DisciplesNet Worship #709: Advent 1B – (Smith 12.03.2023)

To watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

Wouldn't it be great if God would just come down and fix this mess? Pastor Russ speaks to us from Isaiah 64:1-9 and shows us how "fixing all this" is likely our responsibility with God's help. What we desire in terms of hope and peace will come from us bringing hope and pursuing peace.
Our worship service is just over 30 minutes of prayer, some favorite hymns, teaching, and communion.
You may choose to participate, or simply meditate as we tell of Jesus' invitation to "do this in remembrance of me." If you would like to share with us at the table that goes beyond earthly boundaries of time, place, and structure, we ask that you prepare a piece of bread of some type and a drink such as grape juice, wine, or water. As we pray, our prayers extend to where you are. If you are unable to eat or drink, you may want to use a symbolic gesture or mental symbol as you come together at this table of remembrance with us.

We hope that as you join us for worship you will feel a blessing from being part. Please tell friends, family, and others you know about our online church that is here with doors that are always open, walls as wide as the world, and always room at the table.

ORDER OF WORSHIP:

Sometimes we feel lost and forgotten in this world. Pastor Anita speaks to us from Ezekiel 34:11-16 about how, even in those times, God is still looking for us. As Ezekiel brought hope in God's presence in his times, Pastor Anita speaks of hope in God's presence for our times and places.

The first letter of Paul we have is to the church in Thessalonica. The Christians there were struggling with their faith as they realized that Jesus would not be coming back soon. Jesus' answer to the Herodians and Pharisees to "give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's" sounds simple, but it contains complexities, not only of "how much?" but also of "in what way?" Jesus warned people that we wouldn't enter into the Realm of God simply because of who we knew or who we associate with. The Realm of God comes into being in those who act as Jesus acted and share God's love freely and openly. It's both a warning and an invitation. Pastor Deb speaks to us from Matthew 22:1-14, Jesus' story of the wedding feast, and Philippians 4:1-9 and helps us understand how we can be a part of God's emerging realm.
Our worship service is just under 30 minutes of prayer, some favorite hymns, teaching, and communion.

"Is the Lord with us?" This was the question that the Israelites asked Moses in the time when they were wandering in the desert. We sometimes wonder the same thing in our time and place. Rev. Paul's Letter to the Philippian congregation is different from his other letters. The Philippians understood what the Church was called to be and they did their best to live up to that. So, Paul writes to them about the struggles of the life of faith and how one can endure.
