DisciplesNet Worship #653: Proper 28C Anniversary (Phelps 11.13.2022)

The Gospel of Matthew ends with the Great Commission, Jesus telling his followers to make disciples all over the world. That call applies to us as well as them, but how do we hope to follow through on that? Pastor Deb speaks to us from Matthew 28:16-20 about extending the nets.
This worship service marks 12 years DisciplesNet bringing the gospel message through our worship services and other resources. We look forward to continuing our work on the Internet highways.
This worship service is just over 28 minutes of worship, prayer, scripture, a few favorite hymns, and communion. You may choose to participate, or simply meditate as we tell of Jesus' invitation to "do this in remembrance of me." If you would like to share with us at the table that goes beyond earthly boundaries of time, place, and structure, we ask that you prepare a piece of bread of some type and a drink such as grape juice, wine, or water. As we pray, our prayers extend to where you are. If you are unable to eat or drink, you may want to use a symbolic gesture or mental symbol as you come together at this table of remembrance with us.

As we seek to live the life of faith, it is often helpful to consider those who have made that effort before us. Jesus often spoke in parables, short stories that tell us something about God. Some of these are difficult for us to understand. One such is the parable of the Persistent Widow. Communion, the Table, the Eucharist, the Great Thanksgiving are all names for that central practice of Christians to gather at the table, sharing the symbols of Christ giving himself for us. At its core, that celebration is also a celebration that all of us, wherever we are in time and space, are made one through Christ. Pastor Russ speaks to us from Ephesians 4:1-7 and helps us appreciate what that essential unity can mean.
This worship service is 28 minutes of worship, prayer, scripture, a few favorite hymns, and communion. In a time when there is much talk about impending trouble, how do we of faith respond? Pastor Bob speaks to us about such a time in the life of Israel when trouble was certainly coming. Yet in that time, God directed Jeremiah to buy a field; to prepare for a better future, which God said would come. The scripture is Jeremiah 32:1-3a & 6-15 and the message is "A Time Will Come."

Pastor Rahul speaks to us from Luke 16:1-13, the parable of the Dishonest Manager. This is a difficult parable to understand. Is Jesus saying that the manager did well by defrauding his master? One of the most important things we can do for each other is to pray for each other. These "prayers of intercession" can sometimes place us in the role of asking forgiveness and forbearance from God on for the sake of others. Pastor Anita speaks from Exodus 32:7-14 about one such case where Moses prayed for God to forgive the Israelites from their "stiff-neckedness" and helps us understand the importance of asking God to forbear judgement.
