DisciplesNet Worship #497: Advent 3 (Smith 12.15.2019)

To watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

While we can learn a lot about who God is by examining creation, we need more to get a full and accurate picture. Pastor Russ uses the story of John's questions concerning who Jesus was to help us understand the fuller picture of God we have in the person of Jesus himself.
Join us for 27 minutes of prayer, scripture, a number of favorite hymns, preaching as well as communion. You may choose to participate, or simply meditate as we tell of Jesus' invitation to "do this in remembrance of me." If you would like to share with us at the table that goes beyond earthly boundaries of time, place, and structure, we ask that you prepare a piece of bread of some type and a drink such as grape juice, wine, or water. As we pray, our prayers extend to where you are. If you are unable to eat or drink, you may want to use a symbolic gesture or mental symbol as you come together at this table of remembrance with us.

DisciplesNet Worship #443: Advent 3 (Shaw 12.16.2018)

to watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

Rather than remembering the events of Jesus' birth, the third week of Advent looks at the beginning of Jesus' ministry as announced by John the Baptizer. Pastor Bob uses this text to help us see how important it is to consider that Jesus grew up to teach and demonstrate God's love and calls us to follow him in this work.
Our observance of Advent continues in the service. Advent is a time of remembering Jesus' coming to us. We observe Advent each year to remind us that, although Jesus has already come, what will fully come in God's time has not yet arrived. We still must wait and anticipate the fullness of God's rule and realm.
This year, our Advent theme uses the hymn "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel".
Each Sunday and Advent and on Christmas Day, we will have one verse from that hymn as the theme for the day.
The theme for today is taken from the fourth verse:
O come, Thou Dayspring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
and death's dark shadows put to flight
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel
The theme is "Jesus comes as the Light of the World". Jesus brings hope to a world that is dark and filled with lifelessness.
Our worship today is 24 minutes long and includes a time of prayer, scripture, a number of favorite hymns, preaching as well as communion. DisciplesNet Worship #333, Advent 3: “Joy in Spring” (Shaw 12.11.2016)

to watch this worship service in YouTube, click here

As the wintry winds give way to blustery Spring’s new warmth, we experience joy! Some of it is from making it through the winter, some out of excitement of what is to come. For this Third Sunday of Advent, we look at a similar excitement of what is to come announced by John the Baptist, in talking about Jesus. We hope you’ll join us as we consider what it all means in our lives today.

Our worship this week is just over 30 minutes long, with sing-along hymns, prayers, and a special word from Pastor Bob from Matthew 11:1-12. As we do every week, our time together includes a time of communion (breaking of the bread) where you may choose to participate, or simply meditate as we tell of Jesus' invitation to "do this in remembrance of me." If you would like to share with us at the table that goes beyond earthly boundaries of time, place, and structure, we ask that you prepare a piece of bread of some type and a drink such as grape juice, wine, or water. As we pray, our prayers are given to extend to where you are. If you are unable to eat or drink, you may want to use a symbolic gesture or mental symbol as you come together at this table of remembrance with us. (Scroll down for an Order of Worship)

ABOUT OUR DISCIPLES SHEEP:
You may notice in our videos that we have various stuffed sheep with us in worship. To us, these are not toys, but important parts of our church.
It happened this way: When we began producing worship as DisciplesNet in November 2010, one of the first problems we recognized was that when we are speaking to the people on the other end of a camera and internet, we cannot actually see the people to whom we were speaking. It was easy to speak to the other pastors in the room, but as we prayed and preached and spoke, we instead wanted to be reminded of the people for whom we were serving—including people whose best way to attend worship might be online. We wanted to be speaking to them---and as best we could hearing and telling their stories.

So, on a whim, we set some sheep that we’d used for a children’s sermon in front of our speakers, and found that helped! Before we knew it, their number was growing. They spilled over onto the table as we spoke. They have become dear to us and no longer children’s toys— but representations of all of the sheep of God’s pasture, all of God’s children—the real people like you, whom we may not be able to see in real life, but wish never to forget are there, and are each and everyone loved by God more than we can ever comprehend. Those sheep are why we are here.

DisciplesNet Worship #285, “To Save the World ” (Phelps, 01.10.2016)

To watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

"Are you the one who has come to save the world?"  the people asked the little boy.       His answer comes on the heels of our celebration of Christmas --and now, Jesus' first steps as he begins the ministry we read about in the New Testament.
Along the way this worship we'll visit John the Baptist in the wilderness and pay a visit to him in the Jordan River, where the Holy Spirit descends like a dove upon a special One whom John baptizes, and we talk about Epiphany of God's presence in the world. Continue reading →
