DisciplesNet Worship #646: Proper 21 (Shaw 9.25.2022)

To watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

In a time when there is much talk about impending trouble, how do we of faith respond? Pastor Bob speaks to us about such a time in the life of Israel when trouble was certainly coming. Yet in that time, God directed Jeremiah to buy a field; to prepare for a better future, which God said would come. The scripture is Jeremiah 32:1-3a & 6-15 and the message is "A Time Will Come."
This worship service is just over 30 minutes of worship, prayer, scripture, a few favorite hymns, and communion. You may choose to participate, or simply meditate as we tell of Jesus' invitation to "do this in remembrance of me." If you would like to share with us at the table that goes beyond earthly boundaries of time, place, and structure, we ask that you prepare a piece of bread of some type and a drink such as grape juice, wine, or water. As we pray, our prayers extend to where you are. If you are unable to eat or drink, you may want to use a symbolic gesture or mental symbol as you come together at this table of remembrance with us.

Pastor Rahul speaks to us from Luke 16:1-13, the parable of the Dishonest Manager. This is a difficult parable to understand. Is Jesus saying that the manager did well by defrauding his master? Pastor Rahul helps us navigate the twists and turns of the parable and help us to better understand the Realm of God.

One of the most important things we can do for each other is to pray for each other. These "prayers of intercession" can sometimes place us in the role of asking forgiveness and forbearance from God on for the sake of others. Pastor Anita speaks from Exodus 32:7-14 about one such case where Moses prayed for God to forgive the Israelites from their "stiff-neckedness" and helps us understand the importance of asking God to forbear judgement.
This worship service is just over 31 minutes of worship, prayer, scripture, a few favorite hymns, and communion. We normally think of Jesus as courageous and powerful, but in our scripture for today, Jesus' love is characterized "like a mother hen, protecting her chicks." Minister Farrell Steven Osvorne of North Middletown Christian Church speaks to us from Luke 13:31-34 about what that image of Jesus tells us about how God loves us.

Whether it happened in a flash or in a series of events over our life, we can all think back to the time when we became Christian. But what comes after that?
