This is the third Sunday of Advent. The Sunday of Joy.
Joy for those of us who believe in God is not happiness. It is not tied to circumstances. It is not based on feelings. Pastor Anita speaks to us from Isaiah 35:1-10 about joy and how we can experience it regardless of the turns and twists of our lives.
Join us for 27 minutes of worship, prayer, scripture, a number of favorite hymns, and communion. You may choose to participate or simply meditate as we tell of Jesus' invitation to "do this in remembrance of me." This is the second Sunday of Advent. The Sunday of Peace.
In these times when peace seems to be far from our experiences, we have a message of prayers for peace by Pastor Bob. Bob speaks to us from Isaiah 11:1-10 and others to show us that the peace of Christ can be for us more than just longing.

This is the first Sunday of Advent, the first Sunday of the Christian Year. In our current circumstances we might feel very much like those folks in the first century, wondering if there is any hope to see God act decisively for justice. And just like them, we look for the coming of Christ into our world to see the reasons for hope. Pastor Mary Beth speaks to us from Matthew 24:36-44 about their hope and ours, how we can see Christ at work in our world.

There was a time in Jesus' ministry when "He set his face on Jerusalem", knowing that he was going there, knowing that each thing he did from that point on moved closer. There are times in our lives when we have to set our faces toward what lies ahead in order to move toward it, often when that future isn't entirely mapped out. Pastor Bob speaks to us from Luke 9:51-62 about how Jesus set his mind on the future and how we too can move forward in faith.

We sometimes have this impression that "the saints" refers to those people who lived lives deserving to be honored and imitated, but when the writers of the New Testament used the term, they simply meant "the people of the church." So, the saints are people just like us, people with faults and failings, but people who are trying to live out their life of faith. Pastor Deb speaks to us from Luke 19:1-10 with some other references to help us realize that we too are saints, even when we fall short.

Jesus told the story of a Pharisee and a tax collector who approach God in very different ways. In the story, the Pharisee is brash and proudly recites to God all the things he's done. The tax collector, in the other hand, doesn't even look up toward heaven, but simply says, "Lord, have mercy upon me, a sinner." Pastor Russ speaks to us form Luke 18:9-14 about this story and helps us to see why humility is the only way to truly approach God while assuring us that God will indeed have mercy on us.
