DisciplesNet Worship #289, “Matthias Got Up,” (Webb 02.07.2016)

We can’t think of many good reasons to intentionally let down your best friend. Yet Pastor Charles Webb talks about a good reason today in his sermon, “Matthias Got Up!” This week’s sermon and worship focuses upon Mark 2:2-12 and the story of the man with paralysis who finds himself before Jesus. We don’t know the exact name or history of the man in the scripture, but Rev. Webb gives him a name and story in helping us relate to ways that we can be spiritually paralyzed—and what to do about it. Continue reading →

DisciplesNet Worship #288, “Prophetic People,” (Grogan 01.31.2016)

Josiah began ripping his clothes when he heard the news! The scrolls they’d found renovating the temple had God’s long-neglected words for how they were to treat each other—and they were failing miserably. What changes did they need to make? How does this relate to us in the world today?
Our worship today looks at how God calls us to be prophetic people, to work for God’s purpose in the world as a whole, and our small parts of the world. We learn from the prophet Jeremiah as God came to him. Minister Amy Grogan will be preaching from the text Jeremiah 1:4-10, and Luke 4:18-19. Continue reading →

We pass along the invitation to join in or simply meditate as we tell of Jesus' invitation to "do this in remembrance of me." Continue reading →

Ending Racism Special (for Martin Luther King Day, 2016)

Martin Luther King Day is a day of remembering Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. who worked for racial equality in the United States and eventually gave his life in that cause. He learned "satyagraha" (holding to the truth, even in personal suffering) from Mahatma Gandhi and so stands with people all over the world working to overcome oppression and injustice.

To remember King, and the ongoing struggle, we re-present a full worship service on ending racism as well as the litany from that service as a separate piece. We hope that these will help you as you follow Christ in "setting the oppressed free." (Luke 4:18)

The full worship service: on vimeo or on YouTube

The Litany: on vimeo or on YouTube

To watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

"Are you the one who has come to save the world?"  the people asked the little boy.       His answer comes on the heels of our celebration of Christmas --and now, Jesus' first steps as he begins the ministry we read about in the New Testament.
Along the way this worship we'll visit John the Baptist in the wilderness and pay a visit to him in the Jordan River, where the Holy Spirit descends like a dove upon a special One whom John baptizes, and we talk about Epiphany of God's presence in the world. Continue reading →

DisciplesNet Worship #284, “Cue the Son” (Dycus, 01.03.2016)

To watch this video on YouTube, click here.

Happy New Year, and welcome to DisciplesNet Worship!  Today in this second Sunday after Christmas we continue to celebrate the birth of the Christ child.  As we look ahead for how to react in this new year in a world that seems to be spilling over with fear, hate, and trouble, our worship today draws upon the prophets of old who reminded people to not fear, but instead look to God and God's ways.   We are most honored to have Reverend Shannon Dycus bringing our message today--a friend of our DisciplesNet staff and niece of our DisciplesNet regular Rev. Charles Webb.  Rev. Dycus draws upon the popular movie, The Truman Show, and the image within it when things went wrong, to "Cue the sun!"  How would this look in your life? Our world?

DisciplesNet Worship #283 “Let the Child Grow, ” (Shaw 12.27.2015)

To watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

"A tiny baby, lying in a manger……" is the image we see of Jesus so much this time of year. And in worship this week, the first Sunday after Christmas Day, we celebrate the birth of Christ. We'll sing some of our favorite Christmas hymns and more. Yet Pastor Bob Shaw reminds us, in message based upon Luke 2:41-52, that we cannot leave Jesus in the manger. He became a man and we need to let Jesus do that very thing in our minds and hearts. Our prayer is that this worship will be meaningful to you, with a chance to celebrate the birth of Christ as we grow into followers of Christ. Continue reading →

"But you, O Bethlehem…" are words shared by the prophet Micah to Israel during the eighth century BCE.  What did this prophecy mean?  Join us today as we look at these words from so long ago, their meaning then and their meaning now in each of our lives.  Rev. Russ Smith brings our special message today, speaking from Micah 5:2-5.   We also continue lighting candles on the Advent wreath: this Sunday we light the fourth candles, the Candle of Love.
