DisciplesNet Worship #280 Advent 3: “Joy in Darkness” (Borschel, 12.13.2015)

From Rev. Deb Phelps: While beginning to preach this week's sermon, the third Sunday of Advent, I asked listeners to reflect upon persons in their lives whose lives seemed to radiate God's joy, even amidst sorrow, grief, and trouble. My mind went to our DisciplesNet colleague Rev. Dr. Audrey Borschel. She helped launch DisciplesNet Church, volunteering to work with us despite being in recovery from breast and bone cancer, recent brain surgery, and continuing chemotherapy to slow down the cancer. She knew her time was short but chose to give what she could to our DisciplesNet viewers, especially knowing that some may be experiencing some similar challenges.

Audrey loved to preach the "Joy" sermon for advent, and she did so our first three years. Complications of cancer finally took her life in April of 2014, and we miss her greatly. As I thought of Audrey's joyfulness that she loved to share, I realized that the sermon I would like to share this Advent would be from her own. So for our sermon today, we have a repeat of Rev. Borschel's sermon from 2012, For Prophets Now and Then, and Audrey's gift of song as well.
It is our prayer that you will be blessed by this message, and will find ways to share God's joy in the world around you. Continue reading →

Giving Thanks

DisciplesNet

This week, in the United States, people will be celebrating "Thanksgiving." The holiday means a number of things, but all involve the giving of thanks. So, to help you in your giving of thanks, we've collected together our worship services and music that have an emphasis on the giving of thanks.… Read the rest “Giving Thanks”

DisciplesNet Worship #277 Christ the King (Smith, 11.22.2015)

To watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

In your mind, try to bring up the image of a mighty king.  The Jewish and Roman leaders were doing that when they got cross-wise with the humble man standing before them on trial as "king" of the Jews.  We hope that you will join us in worship this week on what is traditionally seen as "Christ the King" Sunday or "the realm of Christ" Sunday--when we, too, struggle with the meaning of it all.  Continue reading →

DisciplesNet Worship #276 “Five Prayers” (11.15.2015)

To watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

How do you approach important milestones in your life?  That is the idea as DisciplesNet Church offers this special time of worship today, celebrating our Fifth Anniversary of ministry. On November 14, 2010, we launched DisciplesNet Worship #1. Yet our team does not want this worship to be about DisciplesNet Church, but of God's presence with each of us at all times, with our milestones--joyful and not so joyful, perhaps--giving us a chance to reflect--and go to God in prayer.

Our team has chosen Five Prayers and Reflections that we were feeling as we approached this worship, and hope that these prayers are appropriate for you to reflect upon, wherever you are today, and whatever your circumstances. Our prayers for Gratitude, Godliness, Guidance, Growth, and Grace make the framework of our worship, with scripture and hymns built in. After each prayer we'll light a prayer candle. In the closing moments of worship we will share in a special moment of communion together. Continue reading →

DisciplesNet Worship #275, “Gifts of the Heart” (Webb 11.08.2015)

To watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

Jesus had a way of turning things around, and in our worship today we look at how gifts that a giver might see as very great, might not amount to all that much after all in God's eyes---when other gifts may seem small to others, but turn out to be the greatest of all.
This week we are blessed to have Rev. Charles Webb bringing our message, speaking from Mark 12:38-44:  the story of the widow's mite. Continue reading →

DisciplesNet Worship #274, “Living God’s Love” (Shaw 11.01.2015)

To watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

"Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise."  These words come to us from the Shema, the instructions given to the children of Israel through Moses--then recited again generations later by Jesus as we read in our scripture today, Mark 12:24-34.
We invite you to our worship today as we celebrate All Saints day--those who have come before us to teach us the way--then turn our hearts toward a sense of the parts we each have before us in working with others to follow the commands to Love God with everything we have, and our neighbor as ourselves. Continue reading →

DisciplesNet Worship #273, “God is There” (Smith 10.25.2015)

To watch this worship service on YouTube, click here

The problem is as old as people's belief in God: "Where is God when people are suffering?" We confront this question head on in worship this week, using the story of Job and insightful words from Revs. Russ Smith and Bob Shaw, and in song, prayer, scripture, and communion. Continue reading →

DisciplesNet Worship #272, “Jesus Paid it All” (Webb 10.18.2015)

To watch this worship service on YouTube, click here.

The two brothers were among Jesus' closest disciples. Yet what James and John came asking Jesus turned out to be a most unpopular request. As soon as their words left their mouths, Jesus' heart may have sunk--they just didn't seem to be "getting it." So Jesus went on to teach them.  Our worship today looks at Jesus' message to them that day-- and it still  speaks to us these years later.   We are honored to have Reverend Charles H. Webb Jr. bringing our message, speaking from the Gospel of Mark 10:25-35. Continue reading →
